We are a mercury-free and mercury-safe dental practice – what that means and why it matters
Posted By Dr. Nathan Pfister
Fortunately, bloodletting and other medical “treatments” commonly performed through the ages have fallen out of favor. Yet, the dental amalgam fillings invented in the early 1800s continue to be applied by (non-holistic) dental practices today. It is the element within these fillings that makes them so controversial: mercury.
Mercury is a known toxin. Like Biodentist Alabama in Dothan, holistic or biological dental practices only use products, tools, and materials that enhance patients’ health. So, toxic amalgam fillings that contain mercury have no place in our practice.
Moreover, our dentists, Drs. Nathan Pfister and Brian Pfister recognize the risks associated with removing old or worn amalgam fillings previously placed by other dentists. In turn, they and the rest of our team abide by the “SMART” protocols established by the International Academy of Oral Medicine & Toxicology for the safe removal of fillings that contain mercury.
Removing mercury in the mouth, safely
Just because a dentist does not place these silver-colored metal fillings does not mean they are equipped to safely remove existing amalgam restorations that contain mercury. Truly holistic dental practices are both “mercury-free” and “mercury-safe.”
At Biodentist Alabama, we take great care to minimize the risks of exposure to mercury during the filling removal process. Mercury is released at higher amounts when the filling is heated. The act of drilling down the filling generates heat. Mercury particles and vapors are also released as the filling is removed to make way for a healthy, non-toxic, metal-free restoration. The IAOMT reports that the vapors released into the environment are “easily 200 times more than the maximum levels allowed by government agencies.”
Mercury exposure presents threats to the health of our patients, staff, and the planet. We have integrated safeguards to protect people and the planet. Just a small sample of these precautions include:
Protective gear to prevent particles from being swallowed
Equipment to effectively suction potentially harmful matter
Purifiers to aid in removing mercury from the air
Removal techniques that minimize the level of toxic vapors, particulate matter
Ongoing nutritional guidance and follow-up exams further support a healthy, speedy detoxification process. We look forward to beautifying your smile and enhancing your overall health with safe mercury removal processes and non-toxic, bio-active filling materials.
